Dormer: A dormer is a structural element of a building that protrudes from the plane of a sloping roof surface. Dormers are used, either in original construction or as later additions, to create usable space in the roof of a building by adding headroom and usually also by enabling addition of windows.
The main types of dormer are:
- Gable fronted dormer: the front of the dormer rises to a point at the ridge of the dormer roof. Also known as a dog-house dormer.
- Hipped roof dormer: the roof slopes back from front of structure to a point farther back.
Extension: An Extension is a structural element of a building that is added on to the ground level by basement, slab or crawl space. Extensions are also known as additions.
Mother/Daughter: A Mother/Daughter is the most common term for an apartment. Most people add Mother/Daughters to accommodate a family member who wishes to live with them without having to give up their own space. Many Mother daughters are separated by a single interior door and usually offer their own entrance, kitchen, bath, etc.
Accessory apartment: An accessory apartment is an apartment added on to an existing one family dwelling for the purpose of additional income.
Shell: A shell is either a dormer, extension or mother daughter that is “weather tight” Weather tight mean that there is a foundation, framing, siding, roofing, exterior windows and doors.
